This paper reports the preliminary findings of a study about the use of an itneractive multimedia and multilingual software application (Addizionario) in an intercultural setting and the role of language in education. The study involved nine primary schools of very small P'urhepecha indigenous communities in the state of Michoacan, Mexico. In an attempt to evaluate the impact of th4e software as a tool for opening up a space for written language production in the maternal tongue, emphasis will be placed not only on products and results, but also on the process and difficulties of using the software in contexts characterized by strong digital divide, significant educational lag, and gradual loss of the indigenous languages.
