Addizionario is an innovative learning tool which supports the child's cognitive and linguistic development. In the form of a hypermedia laboratory, it encourages children to study language at various levels of difficulty and from different points of view, with particular emphasis on lexical competence and language reflection. This paper describes Addizionario and its two strictly interrelated, but at the same time independent, components: (i) the Core Dictionary, a dictionary for children written and illustrated by children; and (ii) the Activity Book, a multimedia creative environment which allows the children to construct their own personal dictionaries and to play with language. Furthermore, some teaching ideas are offered to help teachers take advantage of the features of the software.
