In this chapter, after an overview on vernacular historic applications of masonry buildings, the physical and mechanical properties of the different components of the masonries are discussed such as stone blocks and mortar together with the more diffused types of masonry. Finally, some considerations are given on modern applications, the relevant legislation and environmental sustainability.
