This book includes the papers accepted for presentation at the 9th International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods (ICPRAM 2020), Valletta, Malta, February 22-24, 2020. The conference is sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC) and is endorsed by the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR). ICPRAM 2020 is organized "in cooperation" with the ACM Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence (ACM SIGAI), the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP), the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence (AI*IA) and the Associação Portuguesa de Reconhecimento de Padrões (APRP). ICPRAM is an annual conference and since its first edition, held in 2012, has been a major point of contact between researchers, engineers and practitioners on the areas of Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning, both from theoretical and application perspectives. Its aim is to provide a common forum, where conference attendees can meet and exchange ideas for their future research activity, and possibly establish new collaborations. ICPRAM 2020 received 102 submissions from 33 countries, which were all peer reviewed in single blind manner. As result of the reviewing process, 23 submissions were selected for oral presentation as full papers, 32 submissions for oral presentation as short papers, and 23 submissions for poster presentation. The obtained Technical Program includes a noticeable variety of topics, and we hope that conference attendees will appreciate it. This meeting is complemented with a Tutorial on "An Introduction to Biometrics" delivered by Prof. Rangachar Kasturi, Douglas W. Hood Professor Emeritus, Computer Science and Engineering, University of South Florida. To acknowledge the value of the best contributions presented at ICPRAM 2020, the conference organization set up four awards to be given during the conference: the Best Scientific Paper Award, the Best Student Paper Award, the Best Industrial Paper Award and the Best Poster Presentation Award. The works nominated for the first three awards are selected ICPRAM 2020 full papers. The winning papers will be chosen by the Program/Conference Chairs based on the combination of two elements: the best combined review marks, assessed by the Program Committee, and the paper presentation quality, assessed by Session Chairs at the conference venue. The Best Poster Presentation Award will be given to the most appealing poster. The winning poster will be selected by the Program/Conference Chairs also taking into account the conference attendees' appreciation. Besides the accepted contributions, as a further matter of interest and scientific growth, the conference program also includes a discussion panel and three invited talks by internationally distinguished speakers, namely: Andrea Cavallaro (Queen Mary University of London, United Kingdom, IAPR Distinguished Speaker), Cristina Conati (University of British Columbia, Canada, ACM Distinguished Speaker) and Max Welling (University of Amsterdam, Netherlands). Finally, we take the opportunity to thank the authors, the Local Chair George Azzopardi, all the members of the Program Committee and the additional reviewers, the invited speakers and all members of the INSTICC team whose collaboration has been fundamental for the success of this conference. We wish you all an inspiring conference and a pleasant stay in Valletta, Malta. We hope to meet you again next year for the 10th edition of ICPRAM, details of which will soon be available at http://www.icpram.org.
