This article presents a study on the fortifications of Filiporto, at Pantalica (Syracuse), remained almost unknown after the first notes by Paolo Orsi in 1889. For the first time, a plan of the visible structures is here proposed and a hypothesis of reconstruction characterized by the presence of a tower/gate complex and by a technique of construction with caisson walls. A chronology between the end of the IVth and the beginning of the IIIrd Century b.C. is here proposed, and a wider interpretation of the fortifications, according to the landscape approach, recently suggested for the rural fortifications. Finally, a strategic and cultural connection is suggested between the Filiporto fortifications and the territorial control plan by Syracuse, together with a hypothetical identification of Pantalica as a phrourion.

Abstract
This article presents a study on the fortifications of Filiporto, at Pantalica (Syracuse), remained almost unknown after the first notes by Paolo Orsi in 1889. For the first time, a plan of the visible structures is here proposed and a hypothesis of reconstruction characterized by the presence of a tower/gate complex and by a technique of construction with caisson walls. A chronology between the end of the IVth and the beginning of the IIIrd Century b.C. is here proposed, and a wider interpretation of the fortifications, according to the landscape approach, recently suggested for the rural fortifications. Finally, a strategic and cultural connection is suggested between the Filiporto fortifications and the territorial control plan by Syracuse, together with a hypothetical identification of Pantalica as a phrourion.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
