A fiber Bragg grating sensor based on air-suspended microstructured polymer optical fibers is proposed and theoretically analyzed in the context of refractometric applications for fuel quality control. The grating's sensitivity with respect to structural parameters and the refractive index of the sampled liquid is investigated in order to assess the sensor's efficiency. Minimum detectable index values below 10-4 are predicted in the range of common commercial fuels for picometric resolution.

Abstract

A fiber Bragg grating sensor based on air-suspended microstructured polymer optical fibers is proposed and theoretically analyzed in the context of refractometric applications for fuel quality control. The grating's sensitivity with respect to structural parameters and the refractive index of the sampled liquid is investigated in order to assess the sensor's efficiency. Minimum detectable index values below 10-4 are predicted in the range of common commercial fuels for picometric resolution.
