Preparation of synthetic (polymeric and inorganic) membranes and their characterization

The chapter is dedicated to the description of the various methods for membrane preparation and characterization. In the first part of the chapter, the preparation of porous (symmetric and asymmetric) membranes made from polymeric and inorganic material will be discussed. The different methods for the preparation of composite membrane as well as for the modification of homogeneous dense membrane will be illustrated. In the second part, the methods for the characterization of membrane structural properties will be analysed. Since porous, dense and composite membranes are very different in their properties and applications, a large number of different techniques is required for their characterization. Some of the most important membrane characterization procedures, distinguished by porous and dense membrane will be reviewed.
