In South Adriatic Sea monthly samplings for phytoplankton and chlorophyll a analyses were carried out from April 1995 to March 1996. Phytoplankton cell densities varied in a wide range from 9 x 1000 cells /dmc to 1,093 x 1000 cells /dmc. Diatoms were present throughout the whole year and represented the majority of the phytoplankton population (45.7%) together with phytoflagellates (39.8%), while dinoflagellates and coccolithophorids reached 10.5% and 4% of the whole population, respectively. Biomass level (in terms of chlorophyll a) resulted vey low, with values ranging between 0.01 ug / dmc and 1.8 mg / dmc.
