Sapropel 1 (S1) has been reconstructed on core ND14Mbis. Changes in surface water properties were inferred from the ecological interpretation of planktonic foraminiferal assemblages and complemented with stable isotopes (?18O) data of Globigerinoides ruber white. Deep water properties were reconstructed in base of the geochemical analyses of the U/Mn ratio measured in planktonic foraminiferal coatings, as well as the paleoecological interpretation of benthic foraminiferal assemblages and XRF elemental data from the bulk sediment.
