In this study, the possible use of Cannabis sativa L. to remediate an arsenic (As) polluted soil was investigated . This plant species was suggested for application in a phytoextraction process due to its fast growing, high biomass production, and deep rooted apparatus. As contaminated soil sample was collected from an industrial area in Tuscany (Italy), which showed a high As contamination (about 2000 mg kg-1). The toxicity of the polluted soil was investigated with Vicia faba L., a model plant for genotoxicity test. The As uptake and its effects in C. sativa (fiber hemp) have been estimated through microcosm test, evaluating accumulation of As in plants. Moreover, biochemical analyses evaluating oxidative stress and physiological parameters have been investigated as integrated characteristics related to plant growth.
