A comprehensive dynamic modelling approach to evaluate efficiency and power losses in induction motor drive systems during both transient and steady-state working conditions is proposed in this paper. The developed dynamic model considers all the main loss contributions arising both from the power converter and the motor and permits the drive efficiency to be analysed, even separating each power loss term. Moreover, with respect to other previously proposed approaches, the motor model has been expressed according to a suitable state formulation that is advantageous in terms of reduced complexity and better interpretability of the results, without loss of accuracy. The proposed model has been experimentally validated on a test rig composed of a 2.2 kW three-phase induction motor drive. The obtained test results are given as well.
