The detection of single photons in the microwave range is interesting for different applications, for example for the search of Axions (hypothetical elementary particles, possible candidates as cold dark matter) and Axion like particles. This is a difficult task because of the low energies involved but it can be effectively achieved, for example by using Josephson junctions as switching detector activated by the absorption of single photons with tuned frequencies. The SIMP project is developing an appropriate experimental setup for the direct conversion of Axions in microwave photons and the detection of them thanks to the coupling of a suited Josephson junction detector. We present the SIMP project and the developed setup and discuss issues and perspectives of this experiment.
