The use of nanomaterials and nanoparticles is not new , however the intentional development of engineered nanoparticles and materials able to show specific functionalities started only a few decades ago. The applications of nanotechnologies in food and agriculture has a great potential in addressing serious challenges regarding the sustainable production and distribution of healthy food. However, they are connected to challenges for the human as well as the environmental health and should therefore be carefully evaluated before being used.
L'uso di nanoparticelle e nanomateriali non è nuovo, ma lo sviluppo intenzionale di questi materiali ingegnerizzati in modo da mostrare funzionalità specifiche è incominciato solo alcuni decenni fa. L'applicazione delle nanotecnologie all'alimentazione e all'agricoltura permette di affrontare problematiche importanti quali la produzione sostenibile di alimenti sani e nutrienti. Allo stesso tempo però presenta rischi per la salute umana e dell'ambiente che devono essere presi in considerazione., in molti settori.
