For many years Italy has faced an issue related to the abandonment ofagricultural land, particularly in less fertile areas. This phenomenon carries seriouseconomic, social, environmental and landscape consequences. The chapter firstlyexamines the recent Regional and State legislation on the so-called 'land banks'as a "new" instrument to recover abandoned and uncultivated lands, underliningsome critical aspects. Then, it focuses on the Regional regulations considering therecovery of abandoned and uncultivated lands as an opportunity to pursue socialobjectives, such as social inclusion of disadvantaged groups.
