The data obtained through the use of R/L ratios did not allow to determine whether the R activation during sleep was an active phenomenon or an expression of a reduced activation in the L hemisphere. If the latter is true the hemisphere dominant for verbal-intellectual functions, during sustained inter-relationships with the external environment, could lose this property during sleep. Thus, the R activation in the EEG during sleep might depend upon an alterating asymmetrical function of the two hemispheres in relation to a circadian cycle.

Abstract

The data obtained through the use of R/L ratios did not allow to determine whether the R activation during sleep was an active phenomenon or an expression of a reduced activation in the L hemisphere. If the latter is true the hemisphere dominant for verbal-intellectual functions, during sustained inter-relationships with the external environment, could lose this property during sleep. Thus, the R activation in the EEG during sleep might depend upon an alterating asymmetrical function of the two hemispheres in relation to a circadian cycle.
