This paper describes a surface soil moisture (SSM) product at "field scale" resolution derived from Sentinel-1 (S-1) and Sentinel-2 (S-2) data. The retrieval exploits a short term change detection (STCD) approach that is applied to time series of S-1 observations. S-2 NDVI data are integrated to overcome, or largely mitigate, some limitations of the STCD approach, which are discussed in the paper. Some examples of prospective applications at "field scale" are also discussed.

Abstract

This paper describes a surface soil moisture (SSM) product at "field scale" resolution derived from Sentinel-1 (S-1) and Sentinel-2 (S-2) data. The retrieval exploits a short term change detection (STCD) approach that is applied to time series of S-1 observations. S-2 NDVI data are integrated to overcome, or largely mitigate, some limitations of the STCD approach, which are discussed in the paper. Some examples of prospective applications at "field scale" are also discussed.
