The recent investigations conducted by the Italian Archaeological Mission on the eastern hill of Hierapolis in Phrygia have enabled us to draw a detailed picture of the proto-Byzantine Sanctuary dedicated to the Apostle Philip. The sanctuary consists of numerous buildings arranged on a series of terraces linked by staircases. As well as the baths, used by worshippers and pilgrims, and the large fountain (aghiasma), the ecclesiastical buildings were also characterised by the presence of water. Indeed, a system of channels, fountains and baths for ablutions has been identified in the Martyrion and in the Basilica, built around the tomb of the Saint. The systematic study of the network of pipes and tanks makes it possible to present an initial description of the system of water supply and distribution in the proto-Byzantine and Middle Byzantine periods, as well as shedding light on the multiple functions of water inside the sanctuary.
