Traffic handling for locomotives by a Railroad Company presents several aspects, of which we shall consider only the problem of journey scheduling for one type of machine, with results that can be applied to different types. This traffic is handled, essentially, by assigning locomotives to trains already scheduled, in the two cases that follow: a) "long run", periodic train schedule: seasonal monthly, etc., with a 24 hour period; b) "short run" non periodic train schedule: to meet short notice requests, by customers or else, traffic overloads, etc. As either case occurs for the same locomotive at different times, the two corresponding assignment procedure - to be eventually automatized - are combined, though logically distinct.
