The international code of ISBN books - latest edition, UNI ISO 2108: 2019 - is the unique identification system for monographic publications, in print and digital editions. The numerical code is a necessary element for commercial distribution, and in over forty years of its existence it has periodically been adapted and renewed in the face of editorial developments and technological innovations in the traceability chain. The latest update presents, among other things, new definitions of recognisability for editions in digital environments and novelties to optimize the management of credentials and rights through DRM.
