Applying shape memory biopolymers in medical applications, such as pharmaceutical technology, demands for the combination of different independent functions giving a multifunctional material. The aim of the next generation of smart devices for health technologies is to combine the shape memory effect with other attractive functionalities, such as biodegradability, self-healing, or drug release capability. This multifunctionality is achieved through a prudent combination of different functional capabilities, where each function supplies a particular physical or chemical process for system-level improvements beyond the status quo. The shape memory biopolymers can serve as matrix for drugs (e.g., antibiotics), which are released in a controlled way. After a certain time period when the drug is released, the implant degrades and the degradation products are metabolized or excreted. It is important that the incorporation of the drug does not disturb the shape memory functionality, the diffusion controlled drug release should take place independently from the biodegradability, and the 'shape memory creation process' should not change the drug release.
