This paper discusses the settlement dynamics and landscape use in coastal Tripolitania from prehistory to the medieval period in the coastal areas of Tripolitania based on survey evidence from the west of Lepcis Magna. The discovery of the first coastal Steinplätze (stone hearths) suggests the presence of nomadic pastoral groups on the coast in Prehistory. The survey also yielded evidence concerning the Neolithic phase. In the Roman phase, this coastal space was a fully settled landscape with each available bay being occupied, but the exploitation and use of which (in particular for wine and/or olive oil, fish-salting) remains to be explained beyond the traditional explanation of a life of luxury in the opulent estates.

Abstract
This paper discusses the settlement dynamics and landscape use in coastal Tripolitania from prehistory to the medieval period in the coastal areas of Tripolitania based on survey evidence from the west of Lepcis Magna. The discovery of the first coastal Steinplätze (stone hearths) suggests the presence of nomadic pastoral groups on the coast in Prehistory. The survey also yielded evidence concerning the Neolithic phase. In the Roman phase, this coastal space was a fully settled landscape with each available bay being occupied, but the exploitation and use of which (in particular for wine and/or olive oil, fish-salting) remains to be explained beyond the traditional explanation of a life of luxury in the opulent estates.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
