This work proposes the use of residues (bio-oil and char) obtained from the pyrolysis of Refuse Derived Fuels (RDF) as additives for producing improved asphalts and for recycling aged asphalts to (re)generate new ones. The ambitious double goal of this approach is i) the reduction of the consumption of resources for the production of new road pavements and ii) the landfilled wastes reduction. The optimization of the processes for the production and the use of pyrolysis by-products is expected to fully integrate the urban waste and asphalt cycles.

Abstract

This work proposes the use of residues (bio-oil and char) obtained from the pyrolysis of Refuse Derived Fuels (RDF) as additives for producing improved asphalts and for recycling aged asphalts to (re)generate new ones. The ambitious double goal of this approach is i) the reduction of the consumption of resources for the production of new road pavements and ii) the landfilled wastes reduction. The optimization of the processes for the production and the use of pyrolysis by-products is expected to fully integrate the urban waste and asphalt cycles.
