Abstract

On the evening of November 12, 2019, an exceptional high tide (highest sea level of 189 cm) - the second highest in the ranking since sea-level data have been recorded - flooded 85% of the city of Venice and affected its entire lagoon, damaging a large part of its historical center. A small, but very intense Adriatic cyclone contributed to the high tide, exceptional for the conditions in which it occurred.
