Giannantoni e il nesso tra filosofia e scienza in età ellenistica

The contribution examines Giannantoni's studies on the relationship between philosophy and science in the Hellenistic period. His analysis is characterized by the ability to present texts and authors in their historical concreteness. The limits of the traditional chronology thus appear evident, as well as those of the thesis about the divorce between science and philosophy in this period. Instead, he frames the great flowering of Alexandrian science against the background of the speculation of Plato and Aristotle and reconstructs its links with the subsequent academic and peripatetic tradition, as well as those with the great Hellenistic schools. The discussion on finalism and on the hypothetical and axiomatic method, as well as the theme "sozein ta phainomena - opsis ton adelon", highlight the problematic weaving that joins toghether astronomy, medicine, philosophy. This gives an important indication even for us moderns, against the claim that science is an alternative knowledge to philosophy.

Il contributo prende in esame gli studi di Gabriele Giannantoni sul rapporto tra filosofia e scienza in età ellenistica. La sua analisi si contraddistingue per la capacità di presentare testi e autori nella loro concretezza storica. Appaiono in questo modo evidenti i limiti della cronologia tradizionale, come pure quelli della tesi secondo cui in questo periodo si consuma il divorzio tra scienza e filosofia. Egli inquadra invece la grande fioritura della scienza alessandrina sullo sfondo della speculazione di Platone e Aristotele e ne mette in luce i legami con la successiva tradizione accademica e peripatetica, oltre che quelli con le grandi scuole ellenistiche. La discussione sul finalismo e sul metodo ipotetico e assiomatico, il tema "sozein ta phainomena - opsis ton adelon", mettono in luce l'intreccio problematico che unisce astronomia, medicina, filosofia. Se ne ricava un'indicazione importante anche per noi moderni, contro la pretesa che la scienza sia un sapere alternativo alla filosofia.
