Le légionnaire d'automne Spodoptera frugiperda est un lépidoptère nuisible qui peut endommager et détruire une grande variété de cultures. Il est largement présent sur le continent Américain et est envahissant en Afrique depuis 2016. Des larves de S. frugiperda ont été trouvées pour la première fois en novembre 2020, sur des plants de maïs (Zea mays) dans quatre fermes rurales situées dans la ville de Tafas (Gouvernorat de Dara'a au sud-ouest de la Syrie). Le maïs infesté présentait les symptômes typiques de dégâts causés par S. frugiperda. Par ailleurs, l'identification morphologique des larves basée sur des critères standards a permis de confirmer qu'il s'agissait du légionnaire d'automne. Considérant l'introduction récente de cet organisme nuisible dans la région OEPP, il est probable qu'il soit entré en Syrie par voie de dissémination naturelle (vol actif et courants aériens), potentiellement depuis la Jordanie, pays frontalier au sud de la Syrie et où l'organisme nuisible a été signalé très récemment.
