Following an introduction on the origins of the Private Military & Security Companies (PMSC) and the analysis of two former PMSCs interventions in Sub-Saharan Africa, the presentation deals with the use of private security against Islamic extremist groups in sub-Saharan Africa, focussing on three case studies, namely: i) Specialized Tasks, Training, Equipment and Protection (STTEP) versus Nigeria's Boko Haram; ii) Wagner Group versus Mozambique's Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jammah (ASWJ); iii) Dyck Advisory Group vs. Mozambique's ASWJ. An assessment of these three interventions is provided before introducing the current debate on private security.
