This study explores the development of the notions of right to life and familiy and private life in the domains of bioethics. It evaluates to which degree the Bioethics Convention influenced the case law of the ECtHR. Two arguments will be discussed: the BC as a simple interpretation tool which was used by the Court to reinforce its argumentation or if it played a more prominent role in the formation of common legal principles in the field of bioethics
