Abstract: Independence of aggregation state, site sensitivity and inherently local nature make X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) a very useful tool for exploiting the local order in multi-component glasses. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), probing unoccupied electronic states, valence and charge transfer, is important to elucidate chemical bonding; extended x-ray fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS), providing data about coordination number, first neighbours distances and local disorder allows a quantitative analysis about short range structure. This talk points out advantages and limits of XAS by showing several studies carried out on borate glasses looking both at the local environment of glass former and modifier. A particular emphasis will be given to AgI-based borate glasses where a correlation between the short range structural parameters of ad and I and dc-ionic conductivity has been found out.
