Abstract

Well-preserved radiolarian faunas have been extracted from twelve sections in Middle and Upper Jurassic cherts of the sedimentary cover of ophiolites in the Mirdita area of northern Albania. The radiolarians are late Bajocian-early Oxfordian in age. Thirty-two radiolarian species are illustrated; thirteen species are described as new, the remainder are discussed informally. The ranges of all taxa are correlated with the Unitary Associations Zones (UAZ) of Baumgartner et al. (1995).

This paper deals with the radiolarian cherts of Albania. The principal result obtained is the description of thirteen new radiolarian species for the first time. Some of these new taxa are very common in the cherts of the mediterranean area, and could be used as markers in a future local biozonation for the Middle-Upper Jurassic. This paper has been published on Micropaleontology. This journal is considered a fundamental reference point for all international researchers in this field.
