We study the role of defects in the single-chain magnet CoPhOMe by inserting a controlled number of diamagnetic impurities. The samples are analyzed with unprecedented accuracy with the particle induced x-ray emission technique, and with ac and dc magnetic measurements. In an external applied field the system shows an unexpected behavior, giving rise to a double peak in the susceptibility. The static thermodynamic properties of the randomly diluted Ising chain with alternating g values are then exactly obtained via a transfer matrix approach. These results are compared to the experimental behavior of CoPhOMe, showing qualitative agreement.

Abstract
We study the role of defects in the single-chain magnet CoPhOMe by inserting a controlled number of diamagnetic impurities. The samples are analyzed with unprecedented accuracy with the particle induced x-ray emission technique, and with ac and dc magnetic measurements. In an external applied field the system shows an unexpected behavior, giving rise to a double peak in the susceptibility. The static thermodynamic properties of the randomly diluted Ising chain with alternating g values are then exactly obtained via a transfer matrix approach. These results are compared to the experimental behavior of CoPhOMe, showing qualitative agreement.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
