The aims of this investigation are: i.) to compare profitability between the local Reggiana endangered cattle and the Italian Holstein, ii.) to analyse strategies to increase Reggiana cows competitiveness versus Italian Holstein cows. The DP measured per cow/year in Euro, was calculated as DP = (R1 - C1) - (R2 - C2), where R1 and R2 are the average revenues respectively for Reggiana and Italian Holstein cows per year, C1 and C2 are the average costs respectively for Reggiana and Holstein cows per year. The average revenues and costs were assumed to be linear functions as Ri = pmMP + pbBWnc + pcCW/LIF + IP, and Ci = cr(1/LIF) + cmHM + cpPT + cfMP, where: pm: price of milk production (MP), considering fat% and protein% (Euro/kg); · MP: milk production measured as: i.) standard 305/d milk yield, ii.) year milk yield, iii) year cheese yield; ·  pb: price of one week old calves (Euro/kg); ·  BW: body weigh of one week old calves (kg); ·  nc: number of calves/year/cow sold, considering replacement rate and survival at one week; ·  pc: price of carcass of culled cows (Euro/kg); ·  CW: carcass of culled cows (kg); · LIF: length of productive life (years); ·IP: incentives payments (Euro/year/cow); ·  cr: rearing costs per heifer (Euro); ·   cm: milking costs (Euro/hour); · HM: n. of milking hours year/cow, assuming a 12 places parlor ??; ·  cp: costs for veterinary treatments; ·  PT: probability of having a veterinary treatment; ·  cf: feed costs for milk production.   All revenues and costs not included in the profitability equation are assumed to be equal in the two breeds. In the results revenues and costs differences <50,00 Euro are not included (i.e. price of meat productions, milking costs, veterinary costs). Revenues and costs were estimated from population data and from a two-years period investigation in two mixed herds and in one cheese production consortium.
