In the present work, the effects of the main operating parameters on the characteristics of the obtainable size distributions using materials of different mechanical characteristics after the autogenous grinding test, carried out in accordance with the statement of D.M. of May 14, 1996, were examined. In particular, the following variables were investigated: mill size, rotation speed, fractional mill fi lling, mechanical and size characteristics of the test material. The laboratory tests, performed on a wide variety of natural materials and mills, allowed the extrapolation of mathematical relationships among the main operating parameters, providing comparable results independent of the diameter of the mill used in the test. The minimum dimension of the laboratory mill to be used in the autogenous grinding test was also determined and the bases were made for an extension of the test to the classifi cation of “ground and rocks from excavation operations”.
