Abstract

The authors of this intervention seek to encourage discussion on the various ways in which EUMediterranean Neighbourhood spaces are politically and socioculturally constituted through interactive and dialogic processes. We will suggest interpretations of border-making that go beyond dichotomous processes of inclusion and exclusion or the creation of civilizational otherness. While Mediterranean Neighbourhood can be understood as part of the EU's 'macro-regional fantasies', it also encompasses many different spaces of intercultural encounter and conflict, regional interconnections and fractures, different mechanisms and forms of border-making, but also everyday strategies of border transcendence.
