The article describes Italian emigration in the 1960s and 1970s. In this phaseItalian emigration is characterized by a process of progressive professional specialization,by the prevalence of European destinations, by the effects of free circulationamong EEC countries, and by the consequences of the 1973 oil crisis. Inthe 1960s there were still some elements common to the previous period, that ofthe immediate post-war period, such as temporary emigration and the presenceof many unskilled workers. In the 1970s, new phenomena emerged, such as thelarge number of people returning home, the emergence of new professional figures,and the role of the regions in migration policies. The 60s and 70s representa crucial period for Italian emigration, as they foreshadow some of the trends ofthe current scenario.
