L'inventario della libreria Bouchard e Gravier di Roma

All over the second half of the 18th century, the Bouchard and Gravier store in Via del Corso was the bookshop with the largest amount of French books in Rome. Its activity is here examined with the help of the inventory compiled in 1795 after the death of Jean Bouchard, who founded the store fifty years before. The inventory includes a detailed description of all the equipment in the store, not only the books. The information provided in this document throws light on some aspects of the business activities of the bookshops, in which sometimes the selling of books had just a subordinate role in earnings. Such observations al- low to depict some perspectives of research particularly referred to the Roman book-trade of the 18th century.

La bottega Bouchard e Gravier lungo via del Corso fu per tutta la seconda metà del Settecento la libreria con il più vasto assortimento di testi francesi presente a Roma. La sua attività viene qui esaminata con l'ausilio dell'inventario redatto nel 1795 in seguito alla morte di Jean Bouchard, fondatore della bottega mezzo secolo prima, contenente un'ampia descrizione di tutta la sua dotazione, libraria e non. Le informazioni contenute in questo documento consentono di portare nuova luce su alcuni aspetti dell'attività commerciale delle librerie, in cui talvolta la semplice vendita dei volumi arrivava ad assumere un ruolo secondario nei guadagni. Tali considerazioni consentono infine di delineare alcune prospettive di ricerca con particolare riferimento al mercato librario romano del Settecento.
