The dimension of travel, in its multiple functions, seems to be closely connected to the role played by the three Tripolitan cities of Punic origin, Leptis Magna, Oea and Sabratha. In this contribution we would like to underline some peculiarities of the topographic choice of these urban installations, together with their sea and land projections to the sea and the hinterland. The cultural versatility already highlighted by others with regard to the emporia seems to draw elements from this continuous comparison not only with the Mediterranean world, but also with populations, such as the Garamanti, able to open new horizons of exchange towards trans-saharan Africa.
