Giuseppe Antonio Risso (Nice, 1777-1845), considéré comme l'un des pères de l'école naturaliste niçoise, s'intéressa au cours de sa vie à presque tous les aspects des sciences naturelles. Ses explorations géologiques des Alpes maritimes, quoique minoritaires comparées à ses travaux dans les domaines de la zoologie et de la botanique, ont toutefois jeté les bases pour le développement de l'étude géologique de la région au cours du XIXe siècle.
