EMAS asks registered organisations to assess the environmental performances by evaluating their environmental aspects. For a landfill, the most important ones are leachate and LFG production. The assessment of environmental performance must account for both environmental impact on receptors and environmental performances of management practises. This means that it is necessary to monitor the various stages of LFG and leachate formation, collection and fate into the environment. In the case of LFG, monitoring continuously all the steps of its environmental fate is not feasible, while it is possible to follow all the steps of LFG life-cycle efficiently by a combined use of prediction models and measures. In this paper we show how to combine such tools with the aim of planning a cost-efficient monitoring plan and assessing the environmental performance of LFG management by a proper evaluation of environmental performance indicators.

COMBINED USE OF MONITORING AND PREDICTION TOOLS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT IN A MSW LANDFILL ACCORDING TO THE EMAS REGULATION

2005
