The citrus processing industry generate huge amounts of by-products which are generally disposed into environment or used as animal feed. Nevertheless, these by-products are enriched in high-value compounds with beneficial implications on human health and extensive opportunities of industrial applications. This chapter provides an overview of environment-friendly valorization strategies for the effective reuse and recycling of citrus by-products with a special focus on the use of membrane-based technologies. Recent developments on the separation, fractionation and concentration of valuable compounds from their original sources are highlighted and discussed.

Abstract

The citrus processing industry generate huge amounts of by-products which are generally disposed into environment or used as animal feed. Nevertheless, these by-products are enriched in high-value compounds with beneficial implications on human health and extensive opportunities of industrial applications. This chapter provides an overview of environment-friendly valorization strategies for the effective reuse and recycling of citrus by-products with a special focus on the use of membrane-based technologies. Recent developments on the separation, fractionation and concentration of valuable compounds from their original sources are highlighted and discussed.
