Guglielmo Bechi, architect on the Toscana region, for contextual reasons carried out most ofhis research and professional career in Southern Italy. For over thirty years the archaeologist-architect has been committed to a constant research activity in Pompeii of which, in 1851, he tookthe chair as director. His close focus on antiques "ndings in the archaeological site profoundlyinspired his professional production and, on the wave of suggestions aroused by his discoveries onPompeii's mural paintings, he developed a personal decorative style, which he himself de"ned as"Pompeian". His production is resonant with the nineteenth century neo-Pompeiian increasingdecorative wave, broadly spread throughout Europe. In the decorative projects he curated, histhorough knowledge of Pompeiian mural painting is clear both when he quotes it directly, andwhen he consciously diverts !om Vesuvian models inserting unprecedented stylistic elements; theturning point of his innovative design resides in the brilliant use of colour.
Guglielmo Bechi (1791-1852), architetto di origini toscane, per consuetudine di vita svolse prevalentemente nel Sud Italia la sua attività accademica e professionale. Per oltre trent'anni l'architetto-archeologo fu impegnato in una costante attività di studio nel sito di Pompei di cui, nel 1851,all'apice della sua carriera professionale, assunse la direzione. L'osservazione ravvicinata delle antichità disseppellite nel sito archeologico, ispirarono profondamente la sua produzione professionale e, sull'onda delle suggestioni esercitate della scoperta della pittura murale pompeiana, sviluppòuno stile decorativo personale, da lui stesso defnito "pompeiano". La sua produzione è in sintoniacon quella crescente voga decorativa ottocentesca neopompeiana, ampiamente diffusa in Europa,segnata da nuovi approcci nell'evocazione delle memorie vesuviane. Nei progetti decorativi da luicurati, l'ampia conoscenza della pittura murale pompeiana è palese sia quando ne fa un uso direttoe fedele, sia quando coscientemente devia dai modelli vesuviani inserendo elementi stilistici nuovi,il punto di svolta del suo innovativo design risiede in un uso sapiente del colore.
