Drawing on the results of the archaeological survey conducted on the site by P. Orsi at the end of the 19th century and, more recently, by P. Pelagatti in the 1960s and G. Lamagna in the late 1980s, this paper examines the characteristics of the Mendolito settlement from both a topographical and a defensive point of view. The main technical characteristics of the aggere constituting the walls and the probable "additions" of the late 6th c. BC are illustrated. The probable layout of the walls is then examined, which, with a length of just under 2 km, could have contained an area of approximately 80 hectares. A number of considerations deriving from targeted surveys, measurements carried out with electronic instruments, the observation of the remains of walls on the ground and the analysis of aerophotographic material available on the area allow, albeit hypothetically to be verified in the event of a desirable resumption of archaeological investigations on the ground, to formulate a concrete hypothesis on the location of the northern city gate.
