This is the fourth chapter of a RIMG volume dedicated to amphiboles and prepared in coincidence with a MSA-GSA-ANL workshop on amphiboles held in 2007 and organised by some of the authors. This chapter summarised the results obtained in 20 years of crystal-chemical work on amphiboles, and addresses modern conclusions on cation and anion ordering and its relations with petrogenetic conditions. New models which allow quantitative estimates of the H, Li contents and of the distribution of the high-charged cations based solely on the structure refinement are introduced and discussed.
