John Cotton Dana (1856-1929) was one of the most innovative American librarians of the 19th and 20th centuries. During his career he was director of the public library in Denver (Colorado), Springfield (Massachusetts) and Newark (New Jersey). In each of these libraries, Dana brought a lot of innovations such as reading rooms for children, open shelves, thematic sections reserved for businessmen, extended opening hours. Some of Dana's essays reveals how he deeply knew the De bibliothecis syntagma by Justus Lipsius and the Advis pour dresser une bibliothèque of Gabriel Naudé, and probably found in these books a confirmation of the goodness of his own ideas.
