The full 2p core electron spectrum of HCl, viz. main peak, shake-up and shake-offparts, is analyzed in one ansatz by means of the sudden and static exchange approximations with Stieltjes imaging to obtain correct energy normalization in the continuous shake-off part of the spectrum. Independent and coupled channel descriptions for the shake electron are explored and results are compared with a new high-resolution Cl 2p shake-up/shake-off spectrum of HCl.
