This contribution offers some reflections on the fundamental role of writing in the Jewish world, starting with the so-called Holy Scripture, i.e. the Hebrew Bible, and also touching on Talmudic and Kabbalistic literature and some contemporary authors. The argument develops around three theses. The first explores the extent to which the Jewish tradition is a tradition of the word, and of the written word in particular; the second insists on the fact that scripture is perceived in the Jewish world as an object of infinite interpretation; the third emphasises how it is this interpretation that secures and generates the future for the community of readers.

Abstract

This contribution offers some reflections on the fundamental role of writing in the Jewish world, starting with the so-called Holy Scripture, i.e. the Hebrew Bible, and also touching on Talmudic and Kabbalistic literature and some contemporary authors. The argument develops around three theses. The first explores the extent to which the Jewish tradition is a tradition of the word, and of the written word in particular; the second insists on the fact that scripture is perceived in the Jewish world as an object of infinite interpretation; the third emphasises how it is this interpretation that secures and generates the future for the community of readers.
