This paper focuses on the potential of the study of ancient architectural restoration with regard to the historical reconstruction of the Greek and Roman world. After an introduction listing previous studies and their approaches, the paper takes a fresh look at the perspectives of ongoing research. Firstly, the relationship between restoration and authority is discussed, especially from the administrative and juridical point of view. Secondly, the topic of restoration and memory is assessed in relation to the cultural values and technical solutions associated with mimetic approaches to repairs. The final part of the paper focuses on the technology of restoration, paying special attention to the transfer of practical knowledge associated with carpentry and bronze work. Comparing specific archaeological case studies, epigraphical data and literary sources, the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the topic is highlighted.
