The contexts that have yielded the most complete repertoire of mosaic floors are those extensively excavated, such as the villas of Cottanello and Vacone. Much more limited documentation is available for the other villas, though includes both mosaic floors and cement floors and opus spicatum, used above all for service areas or open spaces. The mosaics date mainly from the late Republican and early Imperial periods and have a predominantly geometric repertoire, with vegetal and rarely figurative motifs.
