In the research project launched by the CNR in 2013 at the Roman villa of Cottanello in Sabina (Rieti), a team of archaeologists, experts in archaeometry and conservation, architects, belonging to CNR Institutes and to Italian Universities examined both the in situ evidence of the wall painting and the painted fragments found during the excavations, not only from a historical-artistic and stylistic point of view, but also as regards their state of conservation. In this paper we present the various aspects of this multidisciplinary work, starting from the description of the excavation context, to illustrate a speedy survey of decay and the archaeological and archaeometric methods of analysis used, to finally arrive at the proposals for graphic rendering of the painted plasters. In addition, issues of conservation and communication of research results are addressed, in order to contribute to the enhancement of the archaeological site.
