As outcome of the 4th ELOISE conference held in Rende, Italy on September 5–7, 2001, selected technical papers that focus on different aspects of pollutants dynamics between atmospheric, water and soil compartments of ecosystems in coastal zones and the open sea are being published in a Supplement of Nearshore Coastal Oceanography, a part of the Continental Shelf Research Series, in parallel to this Supplement of Atmospheric Environment. This Supplement in Atmospheric Environment is a follow up of the first Supplement published in 2001. The aim of these Supplements is to provide an overview of major achievements of research projects undertaken in the framework of ELOISE as well as highlighting recent research results of some of the on-going activities.
