The article examines the debate on language and linguistic education that took place in the journal Nuovi Doveri (1907-1911), founded by Giuseppe Lombardo Radice. In particular, the educational context of the time is explored through the analysis of the dispute between prominent figures such as Gemma Harasim and Giovanni Gentile concerning the teaching of written Italian. The aim of this study is to contribute to the reconstruction of the milieu in which Giuseppe Lombardo Radice’s linguistic education model was developed
